香港曾經是歷史上重要的沉香產地及販運中心，在國際香料市場上佔據了舉足輕重的地位，相傳「香港」之名便是因沉香而得名。五六十年代是香港神香業最興盛的時期，當時的香莊規模甚大，包攬造香、零售、出口業務。然而，隨著工藝師傅們漸漸老去、無人入行、工廠北移、移風易俗等等，香港神香業自八十年代開始式微。

本書作者專注研究香港非物質文化遺產及文化保育多年，透過其豐富的神香業知識和經驗，分享沉香原材料在香港的種植和販運情況、老香舖歷史、各種香品類型、成分和製作工藝、不同使用香的方法等，旨在加深大眾對香港香文化的認識。本書亦訪問了很多香港神香業界的資深前輩，詳述他們昔日的光輝事跡，是香港神香業悠悠歷史的補白，也是香港自開埠以來第一本記載香港製香行業的專題書籍。
鄧皓荃（Aaron Tang），祖籍廣東中山，第三代香港人。香港中文大學公共政策社會科學碩士、香港樹仁大學社會學學士。曾參與研究香港非物質文化遺產以及文化保育多年，並在2007年開始研究香港傳統香文化。自2011年開始自行製作香品，實踐製香技藝。2017年成立港香堂公司在港自行生產各類香品，並開辦各種傳統香文化課程、講座以及工作坊等推廣香港傳統香文化。曾受多間報社、電視台、雜誌、電台、專業團體等訪問。
