《漢書》成書於漢和帝時期，前後歷時近四十年。班固世代為望族，家多藏書，父班彪為當世儒學大家，「唯聖人之道然後盡心」，採集前史遺事，旁觀異聞，作《史記後傳》六十五篇。班固承繼父志，「亨篤志於博學，以著述為業」，撰成《漢書》。其書的八表和《天文志》，則由其妹班昭及馬續共同續成，故《漢書》實際上經四人之手完成。
