隨著時間的推移，《三字經》的內容，不同歷史時期皆有所修改或增加。迄今為止所見的就有宋末元初的1068字本，明代的1092字本，明末的1122字本，清初的1140字本及1170字本等多個版本。並出現相關注解本、插圖本，如明清時期就有《增補三字經》《節增三字經》和《廣三字經》等。清末民初的著名學者章太炎先生的《三字經》增訂本，是近一個世紀以來流傳最廣的版本。歷史上也有不少人注解過《三字經》，比如王相、賀興思等人的注本。
