本書是包天笑晚年移居香港後，受《大華》雜誌邀請撰寫的回憶錄。成書時包天笑已九十六歲，一生橫跨近代風雲變幻的百年。文筆平淡自然，記憶驚人，遍數當時風俗細節，皆歷歷在目；且交遊廣泛，回憶錄中上至官僚政客，下至妓女流氓，對當時世情有着深入的體察，是了解研究清末民國的重要資料。
包天笑（1876年2月26日—1973年10月30日），蘇州吳縣人，鴛鴦蝴蝶派作家，南社成員，中國最早一批報人，與諸多近代名人有所交往。
