基督宗教對帝國一直都不陌生，耶穌還是個帝國殖民下的次等公民，並在帝國的法律下被釘死十字架。只是基督教神學從來認識的帝國就是羅馬帝國的遺緒。對於東方的帝國則大都霧裡看花，甚至充滿浪漫的幻想和情懷，不但導致神學的偏頗，教會宣教的取向也因而顧此失彼……。
