"本書主要內容為《錢穆賓四先生行誼述略》與《從師問學六十年》兩篇文章。前者以錢先生自撰《八十憶雙親》與《師友雜憶》為素材，稍加增補，參以作者對於先生治學之認識，貫串述之，以見先生治學意趣與人生境界。後者所述師長雖不只錢先生一人，但主要內容，係作者自述五十年來接受錢先生教誨薰陶之經過，撮錄不少錢先生談話與信札，內容精要，多為先生述作所未及者。文中亦帶敘錢先生與作者師生情誼，並時見作者人生意境與為學旨趣。

故本書既是錢先生傳敘，也是作者治學回憶錄，可和作者前作《治史答問》、《治史經驗談》合看。"
