本書是對「客家」真正含義的一個探討。在過去，「客家」被認為是中原移民的後裔，因為保留了中原的語言文化，而與鄰近的民系互相區別。但是，最新的資料顯示，無論從分子遺傳學、人類學及語言學來看，「客家」跟其他的南方民系基本相同。因此，我們有需要對「客家」以客觀的方法來觀察分析。
首先，不是所有講「客家話」的人都知道自己是「客家人」。這個認同是大約三百年前，才由珠江口一帶開始傳播出去的。這源於操粵語的土著， 跟操「客家話」移民見互相的誤會，認為對方不是漢人。1852至1867年間的械鬥，將雙方的矛盾激化到極點。而客家認同的建搆也因為客家人和廣府人間的筆戰，在20世紀的頭三十年達到了高峰。
目前客家認同已經在它的發源地慢慢褪色，但在廣東省以外的省份，例如四川和福建，這個過程還在進行中。現在是我們坐下來分析這個「客家現象」的時候了。
