　　一九三九年，沈從文在西南聯大開創作課，汪曾祺是「各體文習作」的學生，其課堂寫作習作經沈從文的修改和推薦，於一九四○年發表首篇小說，其後，寫作生活時斷時續，一九七九年以後，汪曾祺重新出發，〈黃油烙餅〉揭露陰黯面，筆法含蓄，卻引起極大回響。一九八○年寫作的〈受戒〉，逸離現實，回到另一時空，其題材、文字與格調，對當前大陸年輕一代的作家，影響深遠，被視為「尋根派」之始祖。汪曾祺的小說充滿抒情筆調，具有散文之美，但蘊涵的小說氣氛沛然豐富，汪曾祺自述其小說創作有云：「我以為氣氛即人物，一篇小說要在字裡行間都浸透了人物作品的風格，就是人物性格」

　　本書為作者親自為台灣讀者編選的短篇小說精華，依序編年，具有多樣的情節結構，及其散文之抒情筆調，允為汪曾祺小說創作之定本。黃錦樹教授之導讀則鞭辟入裡，期許讀者能夠細細品味到這位「京派」的代表作家，其作品之醍醐味。

汪曾祺

　　江蘇高郵人，一九二○年生，西南聯大肄業四年，曾任中學教員，博物館館員，北京劇院京戲編劇。一九七九年，重新開始創作。在八○年代以後，進入創作高峰，發表〈受戒〉、〈大淖記事〉等許多描寫民國時期蘇北鄉土民情的小說。在海內外出版作品三十多部，並譯成多種文字介紹到國外。一九九七年五月病逝於北京。
