小五義懲治為惡盜匪兩大主題，全書貫徹忠義思想，歌頌行俠仗義精神。
石玉崑

號問竹主人，天津市人。清朝十九世紀著名評話家、小說家，〔清〕（約公元一八五六年前後在世），字振之，號問竹主人。他是北方著名之評話家，善講《忠烈俠義傳》，原稿有三千余篇。其後經人編為小說，成《三俠五義》一百二十回，《小五義》一百二十四回，《續小五義傳》一百二十四回，先後出世。《三俠五義》又經俞樾之改編，名為《七俠五義》，辭句較雅潔，但《小五義》等多雜方言，不脫評話家本色，實校改本之《七俠五義》為勝。被譽為“單弦之祖”。
