二十世紀二十年代，「非基運動」在中國興起，華人教牧與信徒身處教難，遂群起護教，於是高唱教會「本色化」，謀求西來的基督教與中國社會、文化相互調攝融和；中國教會在「本色化」的推動下，日見成長。然而，在英語、電子資訊及國際貿易席捲世界之際，華人教會亦大受影響，「本色化」漸見褪色，神學方面尤其明顯。有鑑於此，香港浸會大學歷史系和建道神學院基督教與中國文化研究中心共同召開了「近代中國基督教本色化的歷史回顧」研討會，探討「本色化」這個教會史上的重要課題。本書收錄了該研討會會議論文十八篇，從「通論」、「人物」、「教會」、「團體」、「教理」五個層面去為中國教會的「本色化」作出回顧與前瞻。
