《指望》是散文集，共分三輯。書中的內容很廣泛，有生活瑣事、有社會議題、有旅行記聞、有讀書寫作心得，可謂包羅萬有，無事不談。
書中有多篇文章提到一個小社區－－石籬。石籬，原是舊區，有舊式的公共房屋，和由無數幢工業大廈拼湊成的工業區，但都已慢慢步入歷史陳跡：舊式的公共屋邨已改成新型屋邨，只餘下兩座逾五十年歷史的建築物，被政府劃為「中轉屋」；又清拆（或活化）了不少工業大廈成為現代化酒店。這些片段，正好紀錄了香港的變化。作者在有意無意之間，把小社區的變化，紀錄了下來，猶如一部石籬的歷史書。
