台灣基督長老教會在台發展至今已近一個半世紀，除了做為宗教團體，發揮醫療、教育、文化、社會服務等功能外，1970年代基於信仰立場所展開的政治關懷，更曾是眾所矚目的特色。為了能更理解當時三大宣言前後事件的內在聯繫，本書往前溯及1954年倍加運動的濫觴，並向後匯流至1985年的信仰告白，再佐以同時期的台灣歷史脈絡系統，期能呈現戰後台灣之時代背景舞台上，長老教會所扮演的獨特角色及所造就之前瞻性的意義。
