本書主要討論清代中葉禮學思想的興起。這可以說明梁啟超以降學界普遍認為清代只有學術而無思想此一觀念之偏誤。同時也指出儒學在擺脫以心性理氣之個人內在修為為主的理學型態之後，走上以禮學實踐為主之途。清代禮學者關心行為結果之善、行為終判之義，他們期望通過各種禮、儀在鄉黨宗族間的實踐，以重整倫常並重建社會秩序。淩廷堪即為此「以禮代理」思想之首倡者。本書先介紹以禮代理此一思潮產生的社會與經濟背景，其次闡釋淩廷堪的以禮代理思想，再說明嘉道間崇禮思想之蔚起，並分析此一崇禮思想與當時理學界產生之爭辯，最後討論禮學思想之社會實踐，以證明清學在思想與經世間的聯繫性。
