尤金‧奧尼爾 ( Eugene O'Neill 1888-1953)

美國劇作家。生於紐約一個演員家庭，幼年隨父親劇團走南闖北，漂泊無定。中學畢業後，考入普林斯頓大學，後因酗酒鬧事被開除學籍。他曾到宏都拉斯淘金，在非洲和南美當過水手，做過演員、導演、新聞記者、小職員等。1912年患肺結核住院期間，研讀自古希臘以來的戲劇經典，並開始戲劇創作，成?專業劇作家。

奧尼爾是位多?作家，有獨幕劇21部，多幕劇28部。生前三次獲普立茲獎。《長夜漫漫路迢迢》是公認的最好作品，這部帶有自傳性的劇作，在他死後的1956年在瑞典首演，並又一次獲得普立茲獎。1936年，以作品中「體現了傳統悲劇概念的劇作具有的魅力、真摯和深沈的激情」，獲頒諾貝爾文學獎。
