本書是沈起予經典代表作，講述了上世紀二十年代北伐戰爭背景下，一群受到五四運動影響，而努力衝破封建枷鎖，嚮往革命、參與革命的進步青年的故事。文中真實反映了那個時代沉悶壓抑的社會現狀。主人公孫丘立等代表的進步力量，其叔父代表的落後的保守派，田煥章代表的工人階級的覺醒人群以及王金華代表的社會渣滓等，他們的鬥爭使城市變為一個大熔爐，在鬥爭、掙扎中又暗含希望。而圍繞主人公蓉姊展開的戀愛故事以及一系列內心活動的細緻描繪，也同樣具有典型的時代性。
沈起予（1903—1970），作家，重慶巴縣人。畢業於日本京都帝國大學。1927年回國，同年在上海參加創造社、抗敵協會，1928年開始發表作品，1930年加入中國左翼作家聯盟，1952年加入中國作家協會，並擔任中國作家協會第一屆理事。歷任《光明》半月刊主編，《新蜀報》《新民晚報》副刊編輯，上海群益出版社主任編輯。著有《殘碑》《飛露》《人性的恢復》等。
