《前夕》是一部长篇小说，以北平为背景，书写了“七七事变”之前一个破落官宦家庭中不同成员的性格与命运。小说中主要描述了抗战前夕的两种力量，一是带有积极力量，以迅速成长的女青年黄静玲和她保持了民族气节的父亲黄俭之为代表，另一类是消极的力量，以个人主义的静纯和享乐主义的静珠为代表。以黄家为当时社会的缩影，通过描绘大家庭中不同人员在民族生死存亡之际做出的不同选择，以及他们迥异的命运，展现出抗战前夕社会的整体面貌。
靳以（1909~1959），原名章方叙，作家，天津人。1932年毕业于复旦大学国际贸易系。抗战期间任重庆复旦大学教授，兼任《国民公报》副刊《文群》编辑。1933年起，先后与郑振铎合编《文学季刊》，与巴金合编《文季月刊》。1940年在永安与黎烈文编《现代文艺》。又任教于福建师专。1944年回重庆复旦大学，胜利后随校迁回上海，任国文系主任，与叶圣陶等合编《中国作家》。1959年7月，以加入中国共产党。建国后，历任沪江大学教务长、教授，复旦大学教授，《收获》主编，中国作协书记处书记，中国作协第一、第二届理事和上海分会副主席，第二届全国人大代表。著有《前夕》《血与火花》《珠落集》《洪流》《幸福的日子》《热情的赞歌》等。
