《茅山下》收录了丘东平的《茅山下》《友军的营长》等多篇小说，这些作品较为真实地反映了那个年代的战斗生活。《茅山下》是以新四军为背景而创作的一篇小说，讲述了知识分子出身的周俊带着满腔热血参加新四军，他“希望自己在战斗中也锻炼成为一个有用的东西”，参谋长郭元龙处事果断、雷厉风行，在战士们中很受欢迎，也因此过于自信，周俊看不惯郭元龙主宰一切的作风，但是又不得不承认，郭元龙在战斗中“是一个了不起的家伙”，周俊的抗日工作进展不顺利，他觉得自己“低劣与无能”，陷入苦闷，最后，为了抗日的共同理想，二人关系改善，亲密地团结在一起共同战斗。
丘东平（1910—1941），笔名东平，革命文学家，广东海丰人。初中时加入共产主义青年团。曾参加彭湃领导的海陆丰农民起义，起义失败后，在香港飘泊历练，后参加十九路军在上海、热河的抗战。1932年在“左联”领导的工农文艺通讯员运动中从事文学创作，1934年参加东京“左联”分盟。1938年在新四军先遣支队做宣传工作。1940年进入苏北新四军抗日根据地，在鲁迅艺术学院华中分院任教导主任。著有《茅山下》《将军的故事》等。
