《在洪流中》收录了洪灵菲的小说《流亡》《在洪流中》《气力的出卖者》等。《流亡》是洪灵菲的自传体小说，主人公沈之菲经历了广州白色恐怖，想要追随起义部队进入潮汕，结果却扑了空，无奈再次逃亡。在颠沛流离中，沈之菲看清社会的丑陋与黑暗，发现了人与人之间的不平等，并且认识到要消除这种状况必须经过革命，才能实现社会的彻底变革，最后他坚定了革命信心，决心为革命战斗到底。《在洪流中》《气力的出卖者》等短篇小说，写出了平民百姓的阶级之苦，他们付出劳动却得不到应有的报酬，却忍受着地主与资本家的皮鞭。
洪灵菲（1902—1934），原名伦修，笔名林曼青、林荫南、李铁郎，广东潮州人。1926年毕业于国立中山大学，同年加入中国共产党。1927年大革命失败后，遭国民党反动派通缉，流亡香港、新加坡和暹罗。同年冬回国，先后到上海中共闸北区委、江苏省委宣传部和全国反帝大同盟工作。同时，与戴平万、杜国庠等人组织革命文艺团体“我们社”，出版《我们》月刊，宣传革命思想。1930年3月“左联”在上海成立，洪灵菲为七名常务委员之一。1933年调任中共中央驻北平全权代表秘书处处长。
