《八仙得道傳》分別敘述八位大仙修仙得道的詳盡過程，從夏商之交太上老君降生人間談起，直至宋代八仙大功告成同歸天府，歷時數千年之久。小說情節豐富，曲折動人，頗具吸引力。故事所敘八位大仙多來自人間，所謂“神仙本是凡人做”。他們都是經歷了千百年的修煉而成仙道。他們中有的是經過天仙轉世，有的是由動物變成人，再由人修煉成仙。他們生活的時代各不相同，但在小說中卻有師徒關係。此書為第一冊。
無垢道人自幼流落成都，師從清雲觀志元法師長達二十八年，熟讀道教典籍，深通玄理。鹹豐二年（1852 年），他遵從師命，遊覽江山之勝，曆南北十餘省。後至京師，落腳白雲觀，著書講道。同治七年（1868 年），無垢道人自序於京西白雲觀。
主要作品：有感於道統失緒，他根據老祖以來近代諸仙祖得道始末與修道情形，著有《八仙得道傳》。該書又名《八仙全書》《八仙全傳》，是八仙題材小說中敘述八仙故事最全、情節最為豐富的一種。
