本書是繼孔厥、袁靜合著《新兒女英雄傳》後，由孔厥獨立撰寫的小說續集。牛大水與楊小梅這對革命愛侶，面對國民黨反動勢力對解放區的進犯，勇敢地接受組織安排的任務，化名為牛剛和楊英，兵分兩路前往十分區。牛剛勇敢地打入國民黨反動派的內部，在地下工作人員的幫助下向外輸送情報，並伺機策反國民黨軍官；楊英則聯合黑老蔡帶領的地方武裝力量，重新奪回被侵佔的“解放區”，在解放區開展如火如荼的反奸清算與土地革命運動，並對黨內部出現的錯誤傾向進行及時的撥正。在人民群眾的擁護之下，勝利的號角即將在晉中區上空吹響。
孔厥，原名鄭志萬，字雲鵬，改名鄭摯，筆名沈毅、孔厥。江蘇吳縣人，作家。抗戰後在宜興任《抗戰日報》編輯，1938年到延安，入魯藝學習，後任研究員、助教，並從事專業創作。1947年隨黨中央轉移到晉察冀邊區。1949年後歷任《人民日報》副刊編輯、文化部電影局編劇、北京通俗讀物出版社編輯、中國作協第一屆理事等職務。著有長篇小說《新兒女英雄傳》（與袁靜合著）、《新兒女英雄續傳》，短篇小說《受苦人》《生死緣》《中朝兒女》《白洋澱水戰》等。
