千古冤忠，嶺南秀士，遼東督師。袁崇煥（1584-1630），明將領。廣東東莞人，字元素。萬曆四十七年進士，授邵武知縣。天啟二年擢兵部職方主事。天啟三年築寧遠城。四年率兵東巡，進兵備副使、右參政。五年遣將分居錦州、松山、右屯等地，修繕城郭，開疆土二百餘裏，使寧遠為內地。六年後金（清）攻寧遠，他佈置戰守，炮傷努爾哈赤致死，擢右僉都禦史、遼東巡撫。七年，皇太極率軍攻錦州、寧遠、皆為其所敗。後受魏忠賢排擠，去職。崇禎即位，起授兵部尚書督師薊遼。崇禎二年後金軍繞道自古北口入長城，進圍北京。他率師千裏赴救，後金用反間計，崇禎誤信他有通敵密約，逮捕入獄，為魏蜇忠賢餘黨彈劾，被磔死。
