本品是《妙法蓮華經》二十八品經文中的第二十五品，名觀世音菩薩普門品，是佛為無盡意菩薩詳說觀世音菩薩，普門示現、利益眾生的功德妙用。

佛教中有一部偉大的經典，名叫《妙法蓮華經》，這部經可說是敍述釋尊本懷的一部經，而現在所講的這個〈普門品〉，就是此經中的第二十五品，為《法華經》中二十八品之一。
　　本品的內容，完全是說明觀世音菩薩的普門利益，因此往往有人把這一品獨立的禮誦。世俗有人稱之為《觀音經》，就是這〈普門品〉。〈普門品〉，這是簡稱，具足應該稱為：《妙法蓮華經•觀世音菩薩普門品》。（星雲大師語）
