《孟子》是繼《論語》以後最重要的儒家經典，記述了孟軻一生的主要言行，突出地記述了孟軻主張仁義、反對暴政和武力兼併的政治思想，以及“民為貴，社稷次之，君為輕”的民本主義思想。全書語言生動，比喻深刻，論證有力，文章氣勢雄偉，在我國歷史上具有重大影響。
孟子名軻，表字無傳，戰國時鄒國人。具體生卒年月不詳，古今有多種推斷，通行的說法大致有兩種，即前322年-前289年，或前385年一前304年。
孟軻是魯國貴族孟孫氏之後，出世時，家道已衰落，是沒落貴族的後裔。據說他的父親名激，在孟軻很小的時候就去世了，孟軻的主要由母親撫養成人。
孟母很重視對孟子的教育，歷史上廣泛流傳著“孟母三遷”、“孟母斷機杼”的故事，足見其良苦用心“。在母親的精心教誨下，孟軻度過了充實的少年時代。
