佛教與素食
一提起佛教，自然就聯想到素食，對中國人而言，所謂的「出家人」就是「吃齋」的人，這是天經地義的事；除了濟公等少數傳說中的人物外，「酒肉和尚」一直到現在還是罵人的話。然而，佛教僧侶是否一定得吃素，實際上的情況似乎並非如此；除了中國佛教（以及直接從中國傳入的臺灣佛教）外，其他如藏傳佛教、東南亞一帶的南傳佛教、日本佛教等等，並不忌諱吃葷。
其實，即使是中國佛教，僧侶的全面素食（禁斷酒肉）也是在佛教傳入中國將近五百年以後的事，而一手導演此一佛教史上劃時代事件的關鍵人物則是南北朝時的梁武帝(502-549)。梁武帝的動機何在？此一事件的歷史意義如何？本書將告訴您答案。
美國耶魯大學歷史學博士(1983)，著有《唐代前期的邊防》、《從西郊到南郊──國家祭典與北魏政治》等作品，並擔任多項編譯工作，目前已出版三十餘冊，其中包括二十世紀初社會學大師瑪克斯‧韋伯(Max Weber, 1864-1920)的著作多種。
