全書分為上、中、下三篇：上篇系統地分析了西方人類學的類別和發展路徑；中篇集王銘銘教授多年研究體會，指出西方人類學存在的局限，並探究解決這些局限的出路之所在；下篇約占全書三分之二的篇幅，講述中國人類學的發展路徑，細述了中國人類學在先輩們的努力下所取得的輝煌成就，同時，又看到了中國人類學在發展過程中存在的問題，最終，為中國人類學指出了一條自身特色與世界抱負相結合的道路。本書堪稱專為國內學習人類學的學生量身打造的本土教材。

王銘銘，人類學家，倫敦大學人類學博士，現為北京大學教授，中央民族大學特聘教授。王銘銘作品宏富，其代表作包括田野志《溪村家族》，探討古代中國的世界觀及其現代命運的《逝去的繁榮》《走在鄉土上》《西方作為他者》，學術隨筆《漂泊的洞察》《無處非中》《心與物遊》，以及人類學導引作品《人類學是什麼》（2003年獲第六屆國家圖書獎），同時主編有人類學專業期刊《中國人類學評論》。
