"“蔡東藩中華史”是蔡東藩所著曆朝通俗演義的白話版，是一部浩瀚而通俗的中華通史。全書浩浩一千餘回，寫盡幾度春秋，上起秦始皇，下至1920年，共記述了2166年的歷史，共計11部。其內容跨越時間之長、人物之眾、篇制之巨，堪稱歷史演義之最。被譽為“一代史家，千秋神筆”。
在史料選擇和運用上，蔡東藩以“正史”為主，兼采稗史、軼聞，他自稱“以正史為經，務求確鑿；以逸聞為緯，不尚虛誣”，對稗史、逸聞等史料的使用極為謹慎，往往“幾經考證”。
在體裁上突出“義以載事，即以道情”的特點，自寫正文，自寫批註，自寫評述。

"蔡東藩，名郕，字椿壽，號東藩，清山陰縣臨浦（今屬浙江蕭山）人。民國時期著名作家、歷史學家。光緒十七年（1891年）中秀才。辛亥革命後，應邀到上海會文堂新記書局任編輯，修撰《高等小學論說文範》《中等新論說文範》《清史概論》等書。1916年至1933年，蔡東藩寫成《中國曆朝通俗演義》，時間跨度自秦始皇到民國九年。其跨越時間之長、人物之眾、篇制之巨，堪稱歷史演義之最。被譽為“一代史家，千秋神筆”。《中國曆朝通俗演義》原為舊白話，為便於今人閱讀和品鑒，由眾多專家學者編譯為當代白話，是為《蔡東藩中華史》。
歷史演義之外，蔡東藩還著有《留青別集》《留青新集》《客中消遣錄》《楹聯大全》及詩集《風月吟稿》《寫憂草》等。"
