差不多每天，我都要從校園裡經過，我都要看到這些整整齊齊並排在大路兩邊的椰子樹。
強風吹颳它們，暴雨淋打它們。它們受盡了挫折，它們知道如何忍受，有時它們甚至從敵人攝取滋養。
一張葉子的掉落，並不代表它的死滅，它代表母樹的成長。
鄭清文的作品，善於描繪一般民眾的日常生活，對人、對事都採取他一貫「簡單」描述卻「豐富」呈現的特殊風格。無論是丈夫被同袍分食的年輕孀妻，中年失業的一家之主，親人自相殘殺的孤獨女子，身體殘障的大學女講師……，這些看似悲劇色彩濃厚的人物，在作者筆下，總能在沉重的身心煎熬之後，雲破天開，找回自己的尊嚴與定位。就如彭瑞金對他的評論：「不以花，不以果誘人，不存心引人注目，總挺立的大王椰子。」其人、其文皆足當此稱。
新北市人，臺灣大學商學系畢業，曾任職於華南銀行。作品以小說為主，內容多為描述臺灣各階層人民的悲歡離合。曾獲得臺灣文學獎、吳三連文藝獎、時報文學獎推薦獎等文藝大獎。1999年以作品《三腳馬》的英譯本，榮獲享譽美國的「桐山環太平洋書卷獎」小說獎，是首位得此殊榮的臺灣作家。
