夏祖焯，筆名夏烈，台北國語實小、建國中學及台南成功大學工學院畢業，美國密西根州立大學工程博士。曾任橋樑工程師、大地工程專案經理、特殊重點計畫經理等職。任教於清華大學及世新大學，教授近代外國文學、現代小說及散文、文學與電影、文學與科技等課程。為我國有史以來唯一工程博士出任文學教授之職。〈白門，再見！〉為早年轟動的短篇小說；長篇小說《夏獵》獲1994年「國家文藝獎」。2006年3月獲「美洲中國工程師學會」頒發「科技與人文獎」。著有《夏獵》、《最後的一隻紅頭烏鴉》（另名《白門，再見》）。
