同治皇帝崩逝後，兩宮太后再度垂簾聽政。東宮太后慈安的個性溫順，不與人爭，然而慈禧在暗地裡仍視她為眼中釘。某日，原本只是小傷風的慈安在吃了慈禧送來的點心之後，驟然病逝！此後，慈禧更順理成章地獨攬朝政。然而慈安太后的死因，不免啟人疑竇……
　　繼俄國擾境之後，法國也屢屢進逼越南，中法糾紛四起。慈禧面對法國的挑釁，一心主戰，然而軍機要臣恭王卻主張以和為重，兩人從此有了嫌隙。於是慈禧另指派醇王參政，最後更進一步罷黜了恭王。
　　慈安暴崩，恭王被黜，慈禧從此再無忌憚，她要趁皇帝親政前，好好掌握這分大權……

高陽
本名許晏駢，譜名儒鴻，字雁冰，浙江杭州人，出身錢塘望族，筆名「高陽」取自許氏郡望。抗日戰爭後考入杭州筧橋空軍軍官學校，並於1949年隨校遷至台灣。1959年卸軍職，投身報界，曾任中華日報總主筆。1962年發表第一部長篇歷史小說《李娃》，一鳴驚人，此後著述不輟，著有《慈禧全傳》、《胡雪巖》、《紅樓夢斷》等九十餘部歷史小說和隨筆，逾二千五百萬字，被譽為華文世界歷史小說第一人。
1992年逝世，享年70歲。
